Watch the Street Cleaning advisory signs and move your car--complain to your ward office if the trucks are out but the signs not. The fines are hefty. This is also time for sewer cleanout work. And lots of street. alley and sidewalk work is underway--be careful. Also, check advisories for special events such as walks, runs, bikethons. Taste of Chicago means bus reroutings.

Near Obama's home. Even walking is restricted to the south side of E. Hyde Park Blvd. and the opposite side of the street on Greenwood and involves no stopping or picture-taking. Six or more security vehicles are present at any given time. There are concrete barriers on both sides of Greenwood Ave. north of E. Hyde Park Blvd. Even on E. Hyde Park parking nearby is not allowed-- and there is a major synagogue, KAM, on the corner. On Greenwood, only residents and registered guests can drive there. Campus buses cannot drop off passengers within a block. KAM congregants and guests must have their names on a registry and are asked to call 24 hours in advance

Pay and Display machines are in the City Lot, other lots, and along streets near the University. Get familiar and expect hefty fines if they are disregarded. Note, kinds of payment they take is limited and there are not enough machines in the city lot..

There are a great many services for route planning--some are not nuanced and could lead to driving or transit-trip nightmares. There are also many real-time and geopositioned alert and get-help services that can be accessed in-car or on cell phone or internet . CTA now has such an alert line for rail transit riders that it says it is improving.

Street work includes 57th from University to Cornell Drive.

Transit projects nearby approved in the federal transit bill for the 1st District (Rush) include 63rd Street (1.6M), Cottage Grove-71st-South Chicago (.8M), sky bridge over 57th St. for DuSable Museum (.8M). Total $13M.

Metra and CTA are getting tough on pass users including enforcing single user rules & Metra is charging $2 for not pre-buying tickets.

Bikes are now allowed on most trains and buses. Metra weekday hours are 9:30-3 and after 7.

Metra's family discount fare is good all the time, not just weekends, summers through Labor Day. Now you can take your bike on all Metra trains between 9:30 and 3 and after 7. CTA has a similar train schedule and has bike carriers on most buses.
