Shoreline Protection Project. 37th to 45th sectors concepts. Park News home
Highlights: Main sheetwall (30' outward from existing) will be exposed about 5' above low water datum and about 12 feet above start of the stone toe berm. There will be a concrete step revetment, with two anchoring sheet pile walls further back. Existing limestone blocks will be used to create a (well-submerged) reef for aquatic life. The back profile consists of a 25' platform, c25' of steps (about 2.5' high each), 40' of downward swale(5' elev.) to a "sand drain," then c38' of upslope (c7' elev.) to 20' of Lakefront Bike Trail situated at highest elevation (and off the cross section as scanned here) then some downslope. How much can be seen from the Drive over this structure (c7' higher than existing) is not indicated. The lake, but not likely the steps, will be seen from bicycle.

Public Notice
Proposed Repair and Modification of approximately 2,040 ft. of Lake Michigan Shoreline Between 43rd and 45th Streets by the Chicago Department of Environment.
The Chicago Department of Environment, 30 N. LaSalle Street, 25th Floor, Chicago, Illinois, 60602 has applied for an Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Water Resources (ILNR/OWR) permit to repair and modify approximately 1040 ft. of existing Lake Michigan shoreline between 43rd and 45th Streets in Lake Michigan in Cook County.
The applicant's engineering drawings show that the proposed repair will consist of driving a steel sheet pile wall an average of 30 ft. lakeward of the existing shore protection, backfilling between the sheet pile wall and the existing revetment, and capping all with new concrete steps. The new revetment will have a lakeward elevation of approximately +5.0 ft. Low Water datum (LWD) and a landward elevation of approximately +15.0 ft. LWD. The lakeward toe of the proposed sheet pile wall will be protected by a stone berm. The berm will have a crest width of approximately 15 ft. The berm will have a slope of approximately 1:2 ft. and will run the entire length of the proposed sheet pile wall. As part of the proposed project, approximately 1500 of the existing limestone blocks will be salvaged and placed in the lake adjacent to the toe stone. these blocks will be used to create submerged structures of various widths, lengths and heights. The purpose of these structures will be to create habitat for local fish species. A location map and plan are attached to the back of this notice.
No work is to start on this project until such a time that the permit is issued.
Plans for the work may be seen at the Office of Water Resources, 100 West Randolph Street, suite 5-500A, chicago, Illinois 60601. Inquiries and requests to review the plans may be directed to Jim Casey of the Chicago Office at (312) 793-5947.
