Jay Mulberry says: We ate dinner with friends at Piccolo Mondo two nights ago and discovered a new feature. In the area where carry-outs used to be sold is a small cafe. A new pastry chef has been hired and fresh pastries are sold with good coffee from 7:00 a.m. on. Seating is available along two attractive counters. Piccolo Mondo has long been one of the most friendly, community-oriented restaurants in Hyde Park. Its owner, Norberto Zas, always pitches in when asked and does it with genuine affection. I hope his new venture is a success, and it will be if we keep it in mind as another nice place for a treat.

Just opened. Large to "small" hamburgers, dogs. Condiment heavy unless you ask not. (A few condiments are extra charge, and you get ketchup from a machine.) Burger quality OK (according to this taster). Fries are divine with half the skin left on-- they even tell you which valley the potatoes are from that day. Pop is self-vended from large machines. Bags of potatoes and a self-scoop free in-shell peanuts (not to take out) vending station separate the service from the seating area. Seating at tables or stools, and outdoors. Taco Station

5300 S. Dorchester. Owner Edgar Vasquez said he is shooting for Thursday, April 7 (2016) or Friday, April 8 for the taco joint’s doors to officially open. The restaurant has scheduled a soft opening at 4 p.m. on April 5 to see how things would run. Vasquez said the delay in the restaurant’s completion was due to the renovations he had to make to the building. Now that the storefront is ready to go, Vasquez is eager to bring fresh and authentic Mexican cuisine to the neighborhood. The menu includes colorfully made tacos, burritos, nachos, homemade guacamole and seafood specials... earthy flavors in the sauces and meats while keeping it simple enough to let the taste of food speak for itself. “I want people to taste the true flavor of the food and don’t hide it with sauces,” he said. “I always tell our chefs not to over sauce or overdress.”
